Italy chosen to be test bed for video ref technology

April 18 – Italy has been selected by football’s law-makers as the first major league to test technology for video replays.

The Italian league (FIGC) says it was chosen at a meeting in London earlier this month and that trials will begin in September.

The International Football Association Board agreed last month to carry out experiments over the next two seasons and FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio said:  “We were among the first supporters of using technology on the pitch and we believe we have everything required to offer our contribution to this important experiment.”

The long overdue technology, the need for which was amply illustrated in Leicester City’s Premier League clash with West Ham on Sunday, will be restricted to contentious goals, penalties, sendings off and cases of mistaken identity.

Initially tests will be in private before moving to a live pilot phase.
