May 2 – Ajax Amsterdam have moved a step closer to winning a fifth domestic league title in six years after hammering FC Twente 4-0.

The proud club from Amsterdam may no longer scale any European heights, but at home their coach Frank De Boer has cemented their dominance. Last season PSV Eindhoven broke Ajax’s hegemony, but this weekend Ajax edged closer to another league triumph.

In the penultimate match day of the Eredivisie season, Ajax demolished FC Twente. Vaclav Cerny scored before the interval before Mike van der Hoorn, Viktor Fischer and Amin Younes secured victory for the hosts with goals in the last ten minutes.

Coach De Boer lauded Thulani Serero, Mike van der Hoorn and the young Vaclav Cern respectively for their individual performances, but downplayed Ajax’s status as red hot title favorites. De Boer has repeatedly been criticised during his reign for not improving Ajax’s European performances.

The win against FC Twente doesn’t quite confirm the title for Ajax. De Boer’s team have been in a neck and neck race with rivals PSV Eindhoven. Both clubs are on 81 points, but Ajax enjoy a better goal difference.

The Amsterdam-based club will win the league next weekend provided they win at lowly De Graafschaap and PSV don’t win with more than six goals against PEC Zwolle.

PSV struggled over the weekend before running out comfortable winners 5-2 against red lantern and relegated Cambuur.
