FIFA issue life bans for Bedoya and Jadue for bribery

Luis Bedoya

May 6 – FIFA ethics judges have handed down life bans on two senior South American officials who have already pleaded guilty as part of the FBI probe into widespread football-related bribery and corruption.

The ethics committee judging chamber says it found Luis Bedoya (pictured), a former FIFA executive committee member from Colombia, and Sergio Jadue of Chile, guilty of wrongdoing including bribery and conflicts of interest.

Bedoya and Jadue ran their respective federations and both are former vice-presidents of CONMEBOL. The ethics committee said they had breached five articles of FIFA’s ethics code.

The US justice department says Bedoya and Jadue, who are awaiting sentence in the United States, took “annual six-figure bribe payments” linked to broadcast marketing rights for the Copa America and Copa Libertadores tournaments.

FIFA’s ethics committee said the case “related to two schemes by means of which they asked for and received bribes from sports marketing companies.”
