May 6 – Last weekend’s Premier League fixtures recorded a season high in terms of overall percentage of stadium capacities reported. With every home team reporting more than 90% of capacity, there were just 7,190 unsold seats out of 400,246 available.
The average percentage capacity for the league was 97.86%, beating the previous high of 97.69% for round 17 just before Christmas.
Six clubs – Swansea, Stoke City, Newcastle, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal – all reported more than 99% capacity attendances. Though the Arsenal figure is the number of seats sold, with many season ticket holders choosing to stay away in protest over their perceived lack of progress and failure to win trophies.
Perhaps the standout crowd figure in this group of clubs was at Newcastle who had their season’s highest weekly position in the attendance table with a 99.43% capacity crowd. Newcastle have often struggled to get close to their capacity but a new coach in Rafa Benitez and a string of results that have lifted them out the relegation places after a sustained run in the bottom three have brought hope of Premier League survival to the north-eastern city.
Bottom of the weekly table were West Brom who had 1,800 seats unfilled in a stadium that was 93.42% full.
