Everton sack Martinez as De Boer puts himself forward

May 12 – Everton have sacked manager Roberto Martinez after three years in charge. Even before he was fired the managerial rumour mill for next season had already started with Frank de Boer reported to be in the frame to take over after agreeing to leave Ajax after five years in charge.

De Boer’s contract runs out next year but after losing out in the Dutch title race on the final day of the season Ajax announced they had agreed to part ways after their tour of China is completed.

“He told the management in a meeting he wanted to stop and agreement has been reached over the cessation of his contract,” the club said in a statement on their website (www.ajax.nl).

De Boer’s agent said he was keen to manage either Everton, who have under-achieved under Martinez, or Valencia. He took over at Ajax in December 2010 and won a record four successive titles from 2011 to 2014 but came up short in the last two campaigns.

Martinez had been facing supporter protests and calls for his removal would have been renewed again by fans before the end of season awards dinner tonight. Martinez still had three years left on his contract.
