No private jet for Van Praag as he keeps election costs under control

Michael van Praag

May 26 – Michael van Praag, the only declared candidate so far to become the new president of UEFA, is unlikely to be accused of overspending in his effort to replace Michel Platini.

Van Praag has been keeping a low media profile since announcing he was standing in the September 14 election but the Dutch FA (KNVB) says it is stumping up just €50,000 to finance his effort.

Van Praag had a €400,000 budget from the KNVB to back his bid for the presidency of FIFA last year. He used half of it before withdrawing.

Bert van Oostveen, the KNVB director for professional football, said: “Europe is small, and easyJet fly to a lot of destinations.”

“UEFA can use the seniority and experience of Van Praag,” van Oostveen told reporters in Zeist, the Netherlands, after a meeting of domestic clubs. “But in eastern Europe, we have to get this message across, because there is still a lot of disunity there at this time.”
