Man Utd top Twitter growth chart, almost doubling against Arsenal

August 25 – Manchester Utd stretched their lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League Twitter followers ranking by more than 38,000 followers last week. Their additional 85,700 followers was more than double that of third placed Chelsea, almost triple fourth placed Liverpool, and more than fives times local rivals Man City.

In comparison, Middlesbrough, has just 147,000 follower in total. Man Utd increased their followers by more than half this total in just one week.

There is no doubt that the ‘Mourinho effect’ and the signing of new players has boosted the Man Utd rate of growth but Man Utd outgrowing its competitors every week has been the trend for most of the past year, just not usually by quite such a large figure.

With sponsorship deals increasingly having a social media component in their valuation, the Man Utd number becomes increasingly revenue-relevant and reflects why it has more and higher value sponsors than any other Premier League club. The big question is in how many of these twitter followers could be activated by sponsors.

Bottom of the table is Hull with just 2,800 new followers, a little surprising seeing they have opened with two wins against all predicitions.

When it comes to tweets West Ham look to have done nothing but tweet all week (530 new tweets), but with a new stadium they have a lot to tweet about. The number of tweets does (Man Utd being the exception) in broad terms correspond to the number of new followers added.

West Ham added 6,700 last week, in seventh place for the week and just below Spurs.
