The horror, the horror. The FA’s fluffed paperwork halts Afobe’s Congo expedition

November 25 – English football authorities do not appear to be too strong on their African geography.

Benik Afobe, a forward with Premier League Bournemouth, was denied his international debut for the Democratic Republic of Congo because his registration paper work was sent to the neighbouring Republic of Congo instead.

Afobe is an England Under-21 international but has pledged his allegiance to DR Congo, birthplace of his parents, at senior level.

He was in line to play against Guinea in a World Cup qualifier last week only to discover the blunder by English officials.

“”Basically, the FA sent my paperwork to the wrong Congo,” said Afobe.

“Transferring it took about 10 days and once FIFA had cleared their workload with all the internationals on around the world, it was the day after the World Cup qualifier against Guinea.”

DR Congo beat Guinea to maintain their position at the top of their World Cup qualification group after winning 2-1.

“In order for me to get used to the squad and the conditions, it was worth making the trip and the team won 2-1,” Afobe said.
