UEFA poised to return to Champions League battleground

December 2 – The UEFA executive committee holds its final meeting of the year next Friday and is scheduled to address European football’s most burning issue: the proposed new Champions league format.

In what is an otherwise relatively bland agenda, one item sticks out: Access list, coefficients and financial distribution for the 2018–21 club competition cycle.

Europe’s major leagues have given UEFA a mid-March ultimatum to rip up proposed changes to the Champions League that favour the most affluent clubs or risk individual leagues scheduling domestic games on the same nights of the week.

Spanish reports suggest eight clubs have already shown interest in a European Super League and it will be interesting to see whether new UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin carries out his promise to revisit the new Champions League deal – struck before he took over from Michel Platini – or whether he will have to bend to his senior executives if a majority of them favour the arrangement that is due to come into force in 2018.
