CBF triples Copa do Brasil prize fund as Globo signs new TV deal

December 22 – The Brazilian FA and TV Globo have extended their broadcast partnership for the Brazilian cup, the Copa do Brazil, from 2018 to 2022, the much of he new deal money being used to reinvigorate the competitiveness of the championship. The winner of the competition will earn €14.35 million in prize money. 

In overall terms, the finalists of the Copa do Brasil could earn up to €19.7 million under the new broadcasting deal. At present, €28.7 million is distributed in prize money and bonuses in the Brazilian cup, but that number will be tripled to €86.16 million under the new agreement.

“In terms of prize money, the Brazilian Cup will be the main competition from 2018,” announced the CBF. “It will be €14.35 million for the champion, another €5.7 million for the runner-up, €2.2 million for the semifinalists, and €1.1 million for the quarter-finalists, which is unprecedented in South America. The winner can earn up to €19.7 million, considering his entry in the first round.”

CBF management executive director Rogério Caboclo highlighted the importance of the new setup for the clubs. “It is a historic agreement that values the competition a lot, especially the participation of the clubs, who will receive record prize money and awards in South America,” he said.

“The contracted value is about €700,000 on average per match,” Cabloclo continued. “The amount that will be paid to the champion, for example, may amount to more than a third of the annual revenue of 14 of the 20 clubs in the Serie A. We will have a revamped and electrifying competition again.”
