Man City team with Google for second hackathon

January 3 – Manchester City have announced dates for a second ‘hackathon’, this time in conjunction with Google. The event will take place February 10-12 at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

The first hackathon hosted by Man City focused on using match day data to build performance-enhancing insights and applications. The second hackathon will be more commercially focused on building digital fan engagement models to boost interaction with the club’s growing worldwide fanbase – their digital “community”.

Man City have been quick to embrace the possibilities of all forms of digital media and unlike most of their Premier League rivals, have not been afraid to try new ideas or take the digital lead.

The club has rapidly built a powerful position in the digital and a significant social media presence, though in weekly growth numbers on the most established social media platforms, it lags a long way behind local rivals Manchester United, as well as generally behind Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. Though it holds a significant lead over Tottenham Hotspur. See http://www.insideworldfootball.com/2016/12/02/chelsea-arsenal-go-head-head-head-instagram-burnley-show-signs-life/

Man City are inviting “inviting programmers, designers, researchers, strategists, marketers, social media specialists, students and innovators” to apply for a place on the hack. The club will provide two nights accommodation and free food for those selected.

That selection will take place along two streams: the Cityzen Hack for the experienced; and the Academy, for those new to hackathons.

Diego Gigliani, SVP for Media and Innovation at City Football Group, said: “From our first hackathon to our co-created website, among many other activities, we’ve witnessed first-hand that great ideas can come from anywhere. By engaging in open conversation with a diverse and passionate community, we’ve been able to uncover new paths to explore together.”

Google, new to the Man City hackathon this year, will support the event with experienced judges and “facilitators”. Local digital agency Play will also support the event.

The deadline for applications is 10am January 23. Application forms are available at www.hackmancity.com
