January 17 – Watford showed the largest percentage growth in Twitter followers in the Premier League this week, as it led the mourning over the sudden death of Graham Taylor, a legendary manager at the club. Hull City, with new manager Marco Silva beginning to hit his stride, led the ranking of clubs tweeting the most.The Watford increase translates to 4,100 new followers, a long way behind the massive 80,300 new followers Manchester United put on their total. Arsenal followed Man Utd with 65,100 new followers.
As Man Utd close in on the 10 million follower mark, Man City (with 44,300 new followers this week) are nearing the 4 million follower mark. In comparison Watford have just 282,400 followers.
Hull City, the worst performing club this week in terms of the percentage capacity of their stadium filled (70%), took to tweeting to keep fans engaged with the club. A boycott of matches in protest against the Allam family ownership means fans are missing the early days of Silva who guided the team off the bottom of the Premier League last week with a big win over Bournemouth.
West Ham had the second largest number of tweets. Celebration of Andy Carroll’s goal, a much-needed league win, or imploring Dimitri Payet to stay? They always have a lot to talk about.
