Man City thump Man Utd by 35K to top weekly Facebook growth stats

January 27 – Man City made another big jump on Facebook again this week with 123,900  new Facebook likes compared to Manchester United’s 89,000. City have fallen into a pattern of huge rises on alternate weeks suggesting the club is undertaking a Facebook marketing campaign to boost its figures.

Elsewhere, on Twitter and Instagram Manchester United continue to dominate. Man Utd achieved more new followers on Twitter than on Facebook with 89,600 new twitter followers. They were followed by Arsenal with 71,400 new followers, Chelsea with 42,100, Liverpool with 31,600 and then Man City’s 21,800.

Man City’s Facebook growth is more than 100,000 new likes higher than its Twitter growth over the same weekly period. Only West Ham amongst the Premier League teams showed a similar pattern with new Facebook likes at 46,200 being significantly higher than the club’s 5,200 new Twitter followers.

Except for Everton and Hull City whose growth in Twitter and Facebook followers was roughly equal, every other Premier League club showed a higher growth on the Twitter platform than on Facebook,

Instagram shows a slightly different dynamic but most notable last week was the enormous gain of 115,400 new followers by Manchester United. This compares to second placed Chelsea’s 51,330 new followers and bottom placed Middlesbrough’s 650 new followers.

Tottenham became the seventh club to hit the 1 million mark of Instagram followers.
