Britain’s betting breaches are just the tip of a global iceberg

February 23 – A total of 53 footballers in Britain have been reported over potential breaches of betting rules according to the BBC.

The figures were obtained from the so-called Gambling Commission’s Sports Betting Intelligence Unit (SBIU) which said it received 53 alerts between 1 August 2014 and 23 December 2016, alleging footballers placed bets on matches.

The BBC quoted former FIFA and Interpol security expert Chris Eaton as saying the figures could represent “tip of the iceberg”.

“In the absence of a global regulatory model, only naive or careless players will be caught in a tiny national net that is swamped in the massive global web that is sport betting,” he said.
