March 9 – The US leads the list of countries represented in the FIFPro 2016 Women’s World XI with four players – Hope Solo, Carli Lloyd, Ali Krieger and Alex Morgan – making the final cut. The team includes players from six countries, including two from Olympic Gold medal winners Germany.
FIFPro collected 3,200 votes from female footballers worldwide, playing at the highest level in 47 countries. All players were invited to pick a team made up of the best players at their position in 2016. The team comprised 1 goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 3 midfielders and 3 forwards.
The World XI includes four players who also made the 2015 World XI – Hope Solo (US), Wendie Renard (France), Carli Lloyd (US) and Eugenie Le Sommer (France).
This was the first time FIFPro held the world player vote.
Five of the players currently play their club football at Olympique Lyon in France: Wendie Renard, Eugénie Le Sommer, Alex Morgan, Dzsenifer Marozsan and Ada Hegerberg.
When it comes to longevity, Marta and Carli Lloyd have both been named World Player of the Year: Marta (2006-2007-2008-2009-2010) and Carli Lloyd (2015-2016).
While the four US players lead the way for the World Cup winners of 2015, the current US team have struggled in the four team SheBelieves tournament just completed in the US where France have dominated. The final standings saw Germany in second place and England in third, just above the US on goal difference.
