UEFA to trial fourth sub system in youth championships

June 2 – UEFA are extending trials of allowing a fourth substitute to be used in extra time to a number of tournaments taking place this summer.

European football’s governing body has said teams at the under-19 and Under-21 championship will be allowed to deploy a fourth substitute, the latest innovation approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The latter stages of the English FA Cup have already embraced the idea.

UEFA will also continue to trial the so-called ‘ABBA’ penalty system, first used at the women’s European under-17 tournament last month. The new tennis tiebreak-style system sees team A go first followed by two spot kicks from team B. Team A would then get two successive penalties until there is a winner. A coin will still be tossed to decide who goes first.

UEFA has also agreed to create a hall of fame to honour Europe’s top players.
