UEFA expands club player awards as Totti picks up career recognition honour

June 14 – UEFA has expanded its club competition players’ awards with the addition of five new categories. The awards will be presented the kick-off draw ceremonies for the Champions League and Europa League in Monaco at the end of August.

Alongside the UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year there will be new awards for best Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder and Attacker of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League season presented August 24.

Another award for the UEFA Europa League Player of the 2016/17 season will be presented the following day at the UEFA Europa League group stage draw, also in Monaco.

The existing UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year awards are for players who have played in Europe, irrespective of their nationality, and are for their performance in all competitions, both domestically and internationally, at either club or national team level.

The voting jury will be composed of the club coaches in the group stages of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League and 2016/17 UEFA Europa League, as well as 55 journalists from the European Sports Media (ESM) group, representing each of UEFA’s member associations.

UEFA have also announced that the 2017 UEFA President’s Award will be presented in Monaco to the evergreen Italian striker Francesco Totti in recognition of his outstanding career.
