Transfer trends: Turkey attracts club buyers as South American imports lose their lustre

July 7 – Premier League clubs are least likely to buy from each other in the transfer window and Manchester City have spent £1.14 billion on players over the past 10 years of which only 35% has stayed in England.

These some of the stats coming out of an analysis of every permanent transfer from the last 10 years done in Europe’s Big 5 leagues in England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The data, from Bbookmakers bwin, finds Serie A clubs are most likely to buy from teams in their same league – two thirds (66.6%) of players are bought from competitors in Italy.

Juventus have won the last six Serie A titles, with stats suggesting their success is down to buying their competition’s star players – the club has spent £690 million and 71% was spent in Italy.

If you are looking for pointers to where the hot markets for player recruitment to clubs in the Big 5 leagues are, Turkey leads the way in percentage growth (+104%), followed by Belgium (+55%) and Ukraine (233%). However Portuguese league remains the biggest exporter in terms of numbers (101 transfers)

Less fashionable is South America, with the number of players moving from the continent to Europe’s top leagues showing a significant decrease – Argentina (-32%), Brazil (-19%) and Uruguay (-33%).
