Rangers’ €7,000 paper balls-up; Celtic players get over incited

July 18 – Rangers have been fined €7,000 by UEFA for throwing balls of paper on to the pitch during their Europa League tie against Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn.

The referee was forced to briefly stop play when home fans pelted him with rolled-up pieces of  paper that had been used for a pre-match card display.

Rangers won the match 1-0 on June 29 but were embarrassingly knocked out when beaten 2-0 in the return leg.

Glasgow’s other major club, Celtic, are also in UEFA’s bad books with striker Leigh Griffiths charged with provoking Linfield fans during last week’s Champions League first-leg qualifier.

Griffiths was charged after tying a scarf to a goalpost at the end of Friday’s 2-0 win while Celtic were also handed a charge for “improper conduct of the team” after they received five yellow cards during the match. Linfield were also cited for the “throwing of objects” and a “field invasion”.
