Senegal suspends Union Sportive Ouakam club as country mourns stadium deaths

July 20 – With the country still in mourning, Senegal’s Union Sportive Ouakam club has been suspended by the national federation for its role in last weekend’s stadium disaster.

A wall collapsed in the capital Dakar on Saturday, killing eight people and injuring scores more during the league cup final between local rivals US and Stade de Mbour. Angry Ouakam fans hurled missiles at opposition supporters before police responded by using tear gas, leading to a stampede as fans attempted to flee.

“Union Sportive de Ouakam are temporarily suspended,” the Senegalese Football Federation announced in a statement, given “the loss of lives and serious injuries” at the Demba Diop stadium in Dakar.

The federation’s discipline committee are to meet in the next few days to decide on permanent sanctions.
