Tebas consigns Villar to history and says now Spanish federation must be cleaned out

July 24 – Javier Tebas, controversial head of the Spanish League who has fought an often acrimonious war of words with Federation President Angel Maria Villar, has welcomed the arrest of FIFA’s number two official saying Villar is now “history” after he was jailed without bail pending an investigation into corruption allegations.

Villar, along with his son Gorka and two other Spanish FA executives, were arrested last week after a police raid and detained on allegations of collusion, embezzlement and falsifying documents. The arrests seem almost certain to end his three-decade reign at the head of Spanish football while his vice-presidency at both FIFA and UEFA is teetering on the brink.

“I think Villar is history in Spanish soccer, I wish him well and that he defends himself the best way possible, but getting rid of ‘Villarism” is what now needs to be done,” said Tebas who has long opposed Villar’s style of management and now wants everyone connected with corruption in Spanish football thrown out.

“We have to drive this out of the game; it would mean nothing with Angel Maria Villar gone should things continue as before with corruption, benefits for some, and a lack of transparency in the way things are run,” said Tebas.

“This situation has to change, hopefully it won’t take long as like I said before many more windows still need to be opened. Villar’s people cannot continue to lead.”
