August 8 – Cameroon’s bid to cling on to hosting the 2019 African Cup of Nations, which has come under intense scrutiny since the decision to expand the finals to 24 teams, has suffered a further blow with the president of African football himself questioning the country’s credentials.

Cameroon thought they would be staging a 16-team event and insist they have but have no qualms about working with eight more but Ahmad Ahmad, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF),  the prime mover in expanding AFCON, has added his key voice to the pressure growing on Cameroon.

During a trip to Burkina Faso, Ahmad suggested there was still time for Cameroon to be stripped of hosting rights if it doesn’t have the requisite facilities in place.

“They will have to work to convince us of their capacity to host the event,” said Ahmad who said a group of experts will be visiting the country before the end of this month. “We will decide what do at the end of that mission.”

Ahmad added that if a new host has to be installed, there will be a proper candidacy process.
