Grimsby vs Derby cup game abandoned as rain stops play

August 9 – Summer, what summer? Well apart from a mid-June heatwave.

Football matches in England are occasionally rained off in mid-winter but rarely in August yet that’s what happened on Tuesday when a League Cup tie between Grimsby Town and Derby County was abandoned after 19 minutes because of a waterlogged pitch.

The visitors were leading 1-0 but with the rain teeming down, the match was called off because of concerns for player safety.

“Commonsense had to prevail, in the end,” said Derby manager Gary Rowett.
