Players scramble for safety as aerial egg assault halts Nantwich vs Altrincham derby

August 18 – Waterlogged pitches often lead to matches being halted. So, sadly on occasions, does hooliganism.  But surely this is one of the most “egg-straordinary” reasons ever.

Earlier this week, a local derby in the 7th tier of English football between Nantwich Town and Altrincham was stopped after the pitch was bombarded with eggs from outside the ground.

The incident occurred in the 13th minute of the Evo-Stik Premier Division fixture with the referee briefly sending everyone back to the dressing rooms.

Nantwich took a 1-0 lead shortly after play resumed, but Altrincham refused to crack, and grabbed a late equaliser as the match boiled to an exciting finish and the sand in the timer in the club canteen ran down.
