Video ref on the spot in Bundesliga and Serie A

August 21 – The champions of the Bundesliga and Serie A saw a couple of key decisions of the new season overturned by the video assistant referee at the weekend.

Bayern Munich were given a second-half penalty against Bayer Leverkusen after the referee, initially unsure about Charles Aránguiz’s foul on Robert Lewandowski, went to the video assistant referee (VAR) system before awarding the spot-kick.

In Italy, Gianluigi Buffon saved the first penalty awarded by video assistant referee (VAR) in Serie A as Juventus, seeking a seventh straight title, began their defence with a comfortable win against Cagliari.

Buffon denied Diego Farias after referee Fabio Maresca used VAR in favour of the Sardinians after an Alex Sandro foul.
