Italy’s Ventura says the open transfer window is hurting national team

August 29 – Italy coach Giampiero Ventura has added his voice to those who believe that the transfer market should close before the start of the season.

At their upcoming meeting on September 7, English Premier League clubs look set vote on whether to change the current system that requires the market to stay open until August 31, invariably after the start of the season.

Many top-flight bosses have bemoaned the current rules in terms of being able to plan for the future and Ventura says the same applies at international level, with so much uncertainty around.

Ahead of their World Cup qualifier with Spain next weekend, their most important match since Euro 2016, Ventura said: “There are players in the middle of negotiations who have not played, or others who have changed teams and have only played a few minutes and it’s the national team which pays the price.”

“It would be better if the players I select were playing all the time, but there’s nothing we can do.”

He said it was a contradiction that the transfer window around Europe ended at the end of August when the season was already two or three weeks old.

“The market should close 24 hours before the start of the season, I’ve always said that.”
