Kuwait vs world: new statutes review in another bid to return to international play

September 4 – Attempts to end Kuwait’s long exile from international football are expected to take place this week with talks over amending the Kuwaiti FA statutes according to local reports.

The International Olympic Committee suspended Kuwait in October 2015, accusing the government of interference in its national Olympic Committee. FIFA followed suit over alleged government interference in the running of the Kuwaiti FA, wrecking any hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.

At FIFA’s annual congress last May, delegates voted overwhelmingly to retain the suspension until Kuwait accepts the changes to the country’s sports law proposed by FIFA. Now, it appears, that could be on the way with a general assembly scheduled for Tuesday.

“We should have met a long time ago. The general assembly meeting is based on the demands of FIFA, which rejects any government interference and wants Kuwaiti clubs to play an independent role,” Saleh Al-Majroub, General Secretary of Fahaheel Sport Club, told Kuwait Times.

Majroub said the new amendments state “an extraordinary general assembly will be convened,” adding that “members should be informed of the place, time and agenda within one week before the extraordinary general assembly.”
