Atletico’s Metropolitano to host 2019 CL final, Baku wins Europa League hosting

September 21 – Atletico Madrid’s brand new stadium has beaten off competition from Baku to win the right to stage the 2019 Champions League final.

The decision was taken by UEFA’s executive committee on Wednesday with the Metropolitano getting the nod over Baku’s Olympic Stadium which will instead stage the Europa League final.

UEFA’s decision may raise some eyebrows since Atletico’s new venue only opened its doors last weekend for Atletico’s game against Malaga but has a 68,000 capacity. It will be the fourth time the Spanish capital has hosted a European Cup final – Real’s Bernabeu Stadium hosted the finals in 1957, 1969, 1980 and 2010 – and the eighth time it has been held in Spain.

Budapest will host the Women’s Champions League final the same year while Istanbul’s Besiktas Stadium will stage the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.

Atletico said in a statement: “Atletico Madrid are proud that UEFA trusts in our facilities for the biggest game in the Champions League.”
