Premier League teams make mark on Champions League with 5 though to last 16

December 7 – Are English transfer fees at last paying off at European level after Premier League clubs made Champions League history?

Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham have all progressed to the knockout stage, making England the first country to have five teams in the last 16.

Tottenham topped a tough Group that also included Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, finishing on 16 points – more than any other team in the group stage. Liverpool were the second-highest scorers after Paris St Germain while only Chelsea failed to win their group.

In five of the six previous seasons that all of the English clubs involved have reached the knockout stage, at least one has made it to the final, a significant boost after five barren years. The draw for the last 16 takes on Monday.
