Nigeria sanctioned for illegible player in 2018 qualifier vs Algeria, but still on road to Russia

December 13 – FIFA has annulled Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Algeria in a World Cup qualifier last month and fined the Nigeria Football Federation CHF 6,000 for fielding an ineligible player.

The result has been overturned and Algeria awarded a 3-0 win but the sanction does not affect Nigeria’s World Cup qualification as they had already clinched a place in Russia.

Abdullahi Shehu played the whole match even though he should have been suspended for picking up yellow cards in two previous qualifiers.

It means that Nigeria still finish top of Group B but with 13 points instead of 14 while Algeria’s total at the bottom is now four rather than two.
