December 14 – Eight candidates have been cleared to run for the presidency of the US soccer federation (USSF) to succeed Sunil Gulati at elections on February 10.
Eight of the nine original candidates for the position submitted the required three nominations to be eligible for the post but as yet the names have not been released because background checks have not been completed.
It has been reported, however, that the nine include three former internationals Paul Caligiuri, Eric Wynalda and Kyle Martino as well as current US Soccer vice-president Carlos Cordeiro and women’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Hope Solo.
Others who have declared their intention to stand include Steve Gans, a former player turned attorney who has advised Premier League clubs on their business and is very involved with youth programmes and coaching; Mike Winograd, who played professionally in Israel; and Paul Lapointe, a soccer administrator. USSF marketing partner chief executive Kathy Carter has also announced her candidacy.
Gulati is expected to continue on the FIFA Council as well as head the joint bid from the US, Canada and Mexico for the 2026 World Cup.
