FIFA head for Mali to mediate power struggle and set up elections

January 10 – A FIFA delegation is expected in Mali this week to organise the process of holding fresh elections after a normalisation committee was established last month to run the day-to-day affairs of the Malian Football Association (Femafoot).

Mali were banned from global football for six weeks early last year for government interference.

FIFA acted after sports minister  Housseïni Amion Guindo sacked the federation’s executive committee following allegations of fraud during a leadership election. He then appointed a provisional committee and ordered the election of a new executive committee within one year.

Local reports say a high-level FIFA delegation will now begin a series of meetings with Malian sports leaders with a view to resolving the current power struggle.

Malian football has been in crisis for years, the source of which is a conflict between FEMAFOOT and the clubs and leagues.
