Cameroon clearing hurdles on route to AFCON 2019 hosting

AFCON trophy

February 2 – Cameroon has reportedly been given a provisional green light to stage the region’s flagship event, the African Cup of Nations, in 2019.

The Confederation of African football (CAF) sent in an inspection team last month assess preparations after CAF president Ahmad Ahmad repeatedly cast doubt over Cameroon’s credentials to stage the expanded tournament which, for the first time, will involve 24 teams.

In December Ahmad declared that “If the host country is unable to organise it, we will find a country that will organise it.”

But according to local reports, officials were “pleasantly surprised” by what they saw in terms of hotels and airports though this has yet to be confirmed. The inspectors apparently insisted on another visit in the coming months but a CAF official told AFP that hosting was now “not in question”.
