VfB Stuttgart and Hanover 96 push Bundesliga crowd figures up 8%

February 16 – Germany’s Bundesliga has reported first half of 2017-18 season attendances as being the second-highest average attendance in Bundesliga history at 43,429 fans per match.

The Bundesliga’s highest first half of the season was in 2011-12 when matches averaged  44,345 spectators.

The current season is an 8% increase on the 2016-17 season figure of 40,271. The 153 matches saw a total of 6,644,612 spectators. This is an increase from 6,161,399 last season, due in part to the return of VfB Stuttgart and Hannover 96 and their big stadia to the top flight. Stadium attendances across the league are averaging over 90% of their capacity.

In contrast the the average attendances in Bundesliga 2 have declined to 16,693 fans per match from 20,845 last season. This is large part the result of five different teams with smaller stadia replacing clubs with larger stadia. A total of 2,554,072 have attended matches, compared to 3,189,292 at this point last season.
