February 27 – After 14 years at Manchester United, Phil Townsend is joining UEFA as its new managing director of communications in succession to Pedro Pinto.

Confirmation of Townsend’s appointment came during the UEFA Congress in Bratislava.

“It was a difficult decision to leave United after so many years working alongside so many good people in a club with such huge global significance in the game but this is a wonderful opportunity at a very important time for European football,” said Townsend in a statement.

Pinto, formerly at CNN where he was the public face of the channel’s sports coverage, is returning to his native Portugal but is expected to retain some kind of advisory role for UEFA president Alexander Ceferin.
