Croatian Bruno Boban dies after being struck by ball in league match

March 27 – Third tier Croatian footballer Bruno Boban collapsed and died after being hit in the chest by the ball during a match.

Boban, 25, who played for Marsonia, was hit by the ball from close range 15 minutes into a league game against Slavonija Pozega.

He continued jogging for several seconds before collapsing on the pitch.

Players from both teams and from the touchline rushed to his aid and an ambulance was called. Medics tried to resuscitate him for 40 minutes before he was pronounced dead on the pitch.

Boban was one of the leading scorers in the Croatian third division.

The club paid tribute to Boban on their Facebook page, posting: “All Marsonia players, members of the board and club staff express deep condolences to the family for this tragic loss. Bruno, God rest his soul.”
