March 29 – English football officials say they are “confident” there will be a women’s football team representing Team GB at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Team GB reached the quarter-finals at London 2012 but did not enter a team for the Rio 2016 Games because the four British federations could not reach an agreement.

London 2012 was considered a one-off for host nation reasons but there were concerns, totally unfounded and somewhat paranoid, that a united British team for 2016 could risk a country’s independence within FIFA.

The BBC are now reporting, however, that the Scottish FA, although still against having Scots in a GB team, would not stand in the way of a squad of English women.

Baroness Sue Campbell, head of women’s football at the English FA, was quoted as saying: “We’ve worked with the home countries and they are really supportive, as long as their individual players get the opportunity to be part of Team GB.”

She also revealed England would bid to host the 2021 European Women’s Championship, vying with Austria and Hungary.

“We’ll put the bid in in the summer, and we’ll know our fate by December,” Campbell said.
