Ayr United take bitcoin payment for new BCH shirt sponsorship

April 13 – Scottish League 1 side Ayr United have landed a global first with their new shirt sponsor paying in bitcoin.

Previously sponsored by on-line sportsbook and casino operator Bodog, the new deal is funded by CoinGeek.com with cryptocurrency Bitcoin BCH being the brand that will feature on the Ayr shirt.

Ayr United commercial director Graeme Miller said: “We were initially approached to see whether we could accept sponsorship payment in BCH. It was a big learning curve for us but we are very happy to be the first club to accept not just payment by BCH but also to promote the cryptocurrency to a wider audience.”

CoinGeek.com was acquired by Calvin Ayre (pictured centre), the driving force behind Bodog. Ayre had become immersed in the bitcoin revolution and

“I think it’s great for BCH that such boundaries and promotional ideas are being used to show merchants and consumers that BCH really is the only true bitcoin,” said Ayre. The valu of sponsorship – either in bitcoin or a comparative currency – has not been revealed.
