Champions League semis: Real vs Bayern, Liverpool vs Roma

April 13 – Real Madrid have been drawn against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals of the Champions League as they continue their quest of trying to become the first team for over 40 years to win the title three times in a row and the first in the tournament’s current guise.

Ironically Bayern were the last side to achieve the feat in 1976 in the old European Cup and the pair face off later this month in an evenly matched contest.

Bayern, back in the semifinals for the seventh time in nine seasons, are attempting to reach the final for the first time since lifting the trophy five years ago.

Liverpool will face Roma in the other semi as they continue their quest to win it for the first time since 2005.

Liverpool got there for the first time in 10 years with a 5-1 aggregate victory over runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City but will not under-estimate Roma who on paper are the weakest side left but made the last four for the first time since 1984 – the season they ironically  lost to Liverpool in the final  — by knocking out Barcelona this week with a stunning comeback. The tie will be a meeting of Liverpool’s prolific stirker Mohamed Salah against his former club.

Arsenal will face Atletico Madrid in a heavyweight Europa League semi-final while Red Bull Salzburg meet Marseille.
