Catching up…jailed Trujillo receives life ban from FIFA ethics

May 9 – Hector Trujillo, the first defendant to be sentenced in the FIFA corruption scandal, has been banned for life by FIFA’s ethics committee for taking bribes linked to marketing deals for World Cup qualifying games.

The Guatemalan judge, who was general secretary of his country’s football federation for six years from 2009, received an eight-month prison term in October after admitting wire fraud and conspiracy charges.

Trujillo, who was said to have received bribes totalling $175,000, was arrested in Florida during a December 2015 cruise holiday. He admitted in court that he took kick-backs from Miami-based sports marketing firm Traffic USA in exchange for his help securing media and marketing rights.

“He has therefore been banned for life from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at national and international level,” said FIFA in a statement.
