UEFA suspends Guardiola for Champions League sending off vs Liverpool

June 5 – Manchester City’s Premier League-winning manager Pep Guardiola has been handed a two-game suspension by UEFA for his conduct during the defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The 47-year-old was sent off for complaining about a decision at half-time of the second-leg on April 10. He will serve a one-game ban next season, with the second game deferred for a year. Liverpool were fined €30,000 over crowd incidents during the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Guardiola insists he “did not insult” referee Mateu Lahoz when protesting that a disallowed goal shortly before half-time should have stood.

City were leading 1-0 – but trailing 3-1 on aggregate – when Leroy Sane was adjudged offside despite firing in after the ball deflected into his path off a Liverpool player. Liverpool won 2-1 to seal a 5-1 aggregate victory.
