Buffon given 3-game ban for CL semi-final referee outburst

June 6 – Veteran Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has been suspended for three games by UEFA in the wake of his red card and behaviour during Juventus’ Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.

Buffon was sent off for dissent in the second leg after protesting to referee Michael Oliver about awarding a stoppage-time penalty against the Italian side, which led to Real’s winning goal.

After the match, the Italian said Oliver had “a bag of rubbish” rather than a heart and should “sit in the stands” and “eat crisps” if he couldn’t handle the pressure.

The charges relate to Buffon’s “direct red card” and for breaching UEFA’s “general principles of conduct”.

Buffon later told Italian TV: “The content remains and I stand by all of it. I’d say them all again – maybe with a different type of language.”
