FIFA talks postponed as Ghanaian government takes lead on football reform

June 22 – A meeting between FIFA and Ghanaian officials, scheduled for today and aimed at restructuring the national FA after it was dissolved in the wake of the Kwesi Nyantakyi scandal,  has been postponed indefinitely.
The second most powerful official in African football,  Nyantakyi resigned from all his posts – Ghana Football Association chief, first president of CAF and FIFA council member – following a television documentary in which he was seen apparently accepting a gift of $65,000 from an undercover reporter.

The government immediately dissolved the FA but FIFA outlaws government inference in the affairs of its member federations.

The two sides were due to meet in Accra for talks but a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Sports Ministry, Elvis Adjei Baah, said the meeting with a three-member FIFA delegation “has been postponed till further notice”.

“The postponement has become necessary as Government continues to engage in very important and comprehensive consultations with major stakeholders in the football industry. This, Government believes, would enable it satisfy all internal processes and consultation ahead of the meeting.

“Nonetheless, Government wishes to reiterate its willingness to engage the world body, FIFA in dialogue which would ultimately result in the positive reforms that Ghanaians desire to see.”

Ghana was conspicuous by its absence at last week’s FIFA Congress in Moscow and did not vote in the 2026 World Cup poll.
