UEFA fine Marseilles and threaten Euro ban unless fans behave

July 26 – Marseille face a one-year suspension from European competitions unless the behaviour of their fans improve, UEFA have warned.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel has deferred the suspension for a two-year probationary period.

Last season’s Europa League runners-up have been ordered to play their next European home game behind closed doors, close off both ends of the Velodrome for the subsequent game and have been fined €100,000.

Marseille have also been ordered to contact Lyon, in whose stadium the final against Atletico Madrid took place, in order to compensate them for the damage caused by their own supporters.

UEFA says incidents in previous rounds, when Marseille played Salzburg and Leipzig, plus other disciplinary charges were also taken into account. Marseille were sanctioned for crowd disturbances, acts of damage, setting off of fireworks and throwing of objects.
