Conmebol pick Santiago for Copa Libertadores final

August 16 – Santiago has been chosen by Conmebol as the venue for the first single Copa Libertadores final in the competition’s history as the Continent’s flagship tournament moves into the line with Europe in 2019 and does away with a two-legged climax.

The Libertadores has been held with a home and away format since its inception in 1960 but now reverts to a Champions League-style one-off final in November

Santiago beat rival bids from Lima and Montevideo to land the fixture after a single-match format was agreed in June.

“Finals over one leg provide a great opportunity for clubs to improve their sporting infrastructure, organization of events, security and comfort for fans,” said Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez.
