CAF contenders undergo integrity checks in race for FIFA Council seat

August 28 -The six candidates for the vacant African seat on the FIFA Council will undergo integrity checks by FIFA before their participation in next month’s poll is confirmed according to the BBC.

The seat of ex-Ghana Football Association president and CAF vice-president Kwesi Nyantakyi will be filled at a specially convened Congress in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, on September 30.

Earlier this year Nyantakyi resigned from all his positions – and was banned by FIFA for 90 days – after being filmed allegedly appearing to take $65,000 in cash from an undercover journalist posing as a businessman. His CAF vice-presidency has already been filled by Nigeria Football Federation boss Amaju Pinnick, recently restored to power in his own country following a legal battle.

CAF have confirmed the candidates must go through a vetting process by FIFA before being allowed to stand.

The candidates are:

  • Elvis Chetty, president of the Seychelles Football Association
  • South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan, who withdrew from two previous FIFA executive committee seat races
  • Moses Hassim Magogo, president of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations
  • Walter Nyamilandu, long-serving president of the Football Association of Malawi
  • Leodgar Tenga, who is a former Tanzania Football Association president and CAF executive committee member
  • Nick Mwendwa president of the Football Kenya Federation

The three candidates from the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) region – Chetty, Jordaan and Nyamilandu – could be whittled down to one after a meeting of the regional body in Johannesburg on September 9 in order to give one sole contender a better chance of beating remaining rivals.

Tenga lost to Nyantakyi in the last election for the Anglophone seat in Addis Ababa two years ago.

Africa has six other FIFA Council members including CAF president Ahmad, who is automatically a FIFA vice president.
