August 31 – Ghana is the latest country to see its football affairs come under the temporary control of FIFA after world football’s governing body set up one of its trademark normalisation committees in the wake of ongoing crisis.
Football activities have ceased in Ghana ever since Ghana FA boss and FIFA Council member Kwesi Nyantakyi became embroiled in a bribery scandal after being pictured taking $65,000 from an undercover reporter pretending to be a businessman.
Earlier this month authorities finally backed down in their determination to dissolve the Ghana Football Association amid reports of the normalisation committee being set up and FIFA have now confirmed that.
According to FIFA the committee’s task will be the following:
– To run the GFA’s daily affairs and cooperate with a task force set up by FIFA, the Confederation of African Football and the Government of Ghana.
— To review the GFA statutes to ensure compliance with the requirements of FIFA and CAF
– Once the GFA statutes meet the requirements of FIFA and CAF, to organise and conduct elections of a GFA executive committee on the basis of the revised GFA statutes.
All members of the normalisation committee will have to pass an eligibility check to be carried out by the FIFA Review Committee.
The committee takes over the work of a two-man CAF/FIFA Liaison Team after the government rescinded its earlier stance and agreed collaborate with FIFA and CAF.
Earlier this week it was reported that Ghana had been stripped of the right to host this year’s African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) but CAF insisted the media has jumped the gun and that no firm decision had yet been reached.
