US and Mexico grouped in regional title battle and 2019 Women’s World Cup qualifiers

September 5 – The US will face Mexico in the group stages of the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship to be played 4-17 October and which will qualify teams for the 2019 World Cup in France next summer.

The official draw was conducted at the Univision Deportes Studios, in Miami, and saw the regions two dominating nations drawn in the same group as Panama and Trinidad and Tobago.

In group B, Canada (seeded in the draw alongside the US) and Costa Rica were drawn with Jamaica and Cuba. The top two teams from each group with qualify for semi-finals with the finalists and the third placed play-off winner going through automatically to France 2019, and the fourth placed nation playing off against Argentina for a trip to the World Cup finals.

The tournament is being played as double-headers with Group A games being played in Cary, North Carolina, and Group B games in Edinburg, Texas. The semi-finals, third place play-off and final will be played at the Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

The US are the current Concacaf champions, having won the title seven times, last time 6-0 in the final against Costa Rica in 2014. Held nine times, the only other nation to have won the regional title is Canada who triumphed in 1998 and 2010.
