Atlantic crossing? Champions League final mooted for New York in 2021

January 12 – A leading marketing executive has raised eyebrows across Europe by suggesting discussions are taking place privately to see whether staging the Champions League final in New York might be feasible.

Jaume Roures, founder and director of media giant Mediapro, which holds the rights to the Champions League in Spain but distributes it to a domestic telecommunications firm, told a Catalan Rádio network that “talks are ongoing investigating the feasibility of hosting a future Champions League final in New York City.”

Roures said UEFA shares the same philosophy as the La Liga decision to hold one top-flight Spanish domestic game per season in the United States. The first of these, Girona-Barcelona, is due to take place in January but is still to gain both player and US Soccer Federation approval.

UEFA have made no comment on the suggestion but Roures declared that the 2021 Champions League final could be the first to be held outside Europe, with venues for the next two already decided.
