Boost for SPFL as Betfred extends Scottish League Cup title sponsorship 

October 22 – Bookmaker Betfred has agreed a one-year extension to its title sponsorship of the Scottish League Cup taking the company through to the end of the 2019/20 season.

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) first signed Betfred as title sponsor for its league cup in 2016. This weekend the Betfred Cup semi-finals will see Heart of Midlothian play Celtic at while Aberdeen facing Rangers at Hampden Park.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL chief executive, said: “We are delighted to announce this sponsorship extension with Betfred as we build up to this Sunday’s Betfred Cup semi-finals at BT Murrayfield and Hampden Park.

“Betfred have fully embraced the new competition format since its inception in 2016 and we look forward to continuing our partnership until at least 2020.”

Betfred first came on board as title sponsor when the competition was revamped for the 2016/17 season with a ground-breaking bonus point system beginning in the summer months with group stages for clubs not playing in European qualifying. The SPFL also added a new broadcast partner in BT Sport. The final of the competition was moved to be played before Christmas final to allow for the re-introduction of the winter break.

Betfred owner Fred Done, said: “I feel that the revamped Betfred Cup has been a tremendous success and I had no hesitation in agreeing an extension to the current deal.”

The extension of the title sponsorship was announced as an improvement on the previous terms but no value was given for the deal.
